“The short man with the greatest stature”
JOAQUIN “EL CHAPO” GUZMAN
From hard and tough beginnings as a child, he used to sell oranges as a little kid with his brothers and sisters to earn money. Born to a big family of poor ranchers, his father had connections to Pedro Aviles Perez, a top drug boss that revolutionized drug smuggling by way of airplanes, tunnels, and many other methods.
In his early 20s Guzman began his drug career due to his fathers connections. He slowly but surely climbed his way to the top. Guzman was an ambitious worker and his bosses noticed, giving him big breaks such as overseeing shipments and logistics. Sooner than later, Guzman was directly working for “El Padrino” (the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel) , but when police captured “El Padrino”, Guzman took over the Sinaloa Cartel.
Guzman’s Sinaloa Cartel shipped masses of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana to many countries due to the fact that Colombian Cartels were becoming increasingly weak. He established ties in China, Thailand, Europe, Colombia, and countless other places. But more importantly after the fall of Colombian Cartels, the Sinaloa Cartel would no longer need to pay Colombians for drugs, and the excess money they had, they would use to gain absolute power in Mexico and make more money than ever. Guzman expanded his power to 17 of 31 states in Mexico.
After several attempted assassinations, attempts to capture him, and shoot outs, Guzman was finally captured by police and sent to a maximum security prison in 1993. He kept control of the Sinaloa Cartel due to a mobile phone he used in prison. After being transferred to multiple prisons, and being imprisoned for several years, he masterminded his own escape plan. He had every guard on his payroll and in 2001, he escaped from prison and continues as boss of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Now seen as the “Robin Hood” by the majority of people due to his care of his home town and respect for innocent people. Many people would praise and cheer on Guzman, for fooling the whole prison and justice system, and helping out his hometown community.
As of now, “El Chapo” remains as INTERPOLS most wanted person in the world.
Through the current drug cartel wars, The Sinaloa Cartel remains the most powerful drug cartel operating in Mexico due to Guzman’s power and respect, along with a partnership with “El Mayo” Zambada. And also due to his elite sicarios who use fear, intimidation and extreme forms of violence and torture against rival groups.
